Why I Make Myself Cry on Purpose
Do you ever try and build walls around your heart in attempt to Not Feel? Yeah, me too.
I’ve spent years of personal development, coaching, and therapy dismantling those walls. And yet, some days…especially these days…it is very tempting to build them right back up.
Here’s the thing: We are human. We are hardwired to feel feelings. Feeling is the root of connection- with ourselves, each other, and whateverisbiggerthanus. And connection is emotional oxygen: we require it to live.
It’s because of that, that sometimes, I will intentionally expose myself to art that moves me, that bypasses all the walls and moats and electrical fences, and rushes straight into my heart. I call it Feeling on Purpose.
I’m sharing my current Feeling on Purpose favorites with you here. I’ve listened to or read each of these at least once this week, so as to keep my heart open, and keep me connected and alive.
Angels of the Get Through, written and spoken by Andrea Gibson
At the River Clarion, written by Mary Oliver
Stained Glass, performed by John Lucas
Untamed, by Glennon Doyle
I would love to hear the art that you take like medicine: medicine for your heart, medicine to Feel. Send me a note, if you’re inclined.
